Yamas and Niyamas

The yamas and niyamas comprise the first two limbs respectively of the eight limbs of yoga as originally described by Patanjali. The yamas are concerned with our interaction with and behaviour towards others and the niyamas with our attitude and behaviour towards ourselves.

When we perform an asana practice in the way that is right for us, we are also already working in accordance with the yamas and niyamas, in particular ahimsa, aparigraha and santosha.
