Residential Special Focus Weekend at Domus Mariae

The focus of this weekend is Awareness of the Spine and Bandhas led by Tracy Gent. The SPINE referred to as meru danda in yoga is the supporting pillar of our life carrying information between brain and body but for many of us it doesn't actually feel strong and supportive or we may be unable to sense and feel the spine at all or be able to distinguish it from the back of the body in general. Still others of us are all too aware of the spine because it gives us pain. This weekend counts as 10 hours CPD with certificate for yoga teachers.

RESIDENTIAL SPECIAL FOCUS YOGA WEEKEND - 27/09/2019 to 29/09/2019

This weekend will be led by Tracy Gent. Tracy holds the Yoga for Health Foundation's general and remedial training certificates. Since 1998 she has been studying the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, aspects of Hatha and tantric yoga, the yoga of the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads as well as touching on yoga's sister philosophy Samkhya with Dr. Mukund Bhole, a renowned expert on the therapeutic aspects of yoga and on pranayama. Her special interests are in the subtle energies of the inner aspects of yoga, self-realisation and the possibility of transcendence.

The goal of this inner yoga workshop is to work with ASANAS AND PRANAYAMA to bring awareness to the area of the spine so that we can experience the vertebral muscles working in a positive way. We can then begin to appreciate its true dimensions and sense and feel it as a strong column. Such practices are important not only for their therapeutic value but because awareness of meru danda is important in the arousal of KUNDALINI and where we are trying to experience sensations flowing along IDA, PINGALA and especially SUSHUMNA NADI, which are said to be located in the vicinity of the vertebral column.

Kundalini is described as being asleep, coiled up near the base of the spine and sushumna nadi is likened to the hidden River Saraswati which disappeared below the surface of the earth many ages ago. Many of the techniques described in the Hathapradipika are specifically designed to arouse kundalini and initiate a flow of sensations along sushumna, and the workshop will also serve as an introduction to some of these practices, particularly uddiyana and the bandhas.

A lot of the work will be done in sitting positions (don’t worry - releasing postures and relaxation will also be a part of the sessions!) so please bring everything you might need to make yourself comfortable - blocks, bolsters, cushions - and because the work is “cooling”, clothing layers and a blanket are also a must.

If you are teaching and have attended previous inner yoga sessions and would welcome the opportunity to practise presenting an aspect of the work please let us know when you book so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

The full programme will be sent to attendees prior to the event.
