DOMUS MARIAE is a retreat and conference centre co-located with the Chigwell Convent. It is easily accessible from London by road, train, tube or bus and from the M25 and other major roads. It is in large extensive grounds that are well cared for, peaceful and ideal for relaxation and contemplation with many quiet spots to sit. There is also a labyrinth close to the house.
SINGLE BEDROOMS – there are 24 single, cosy centrally heated rooms in the main house. Each room has a bed, wash-basin with cupboard, wardrobe, small table and armchair. There are plenty of showers with a step into each and toilets on all floors. Towels and linen are provided. All floors are accessible by lift or stairs.
TWIN AND DOUBLED BEDDED ROOMS – there are five further rooms in the West Wing near the dining room, a short covered walk from the yoga hall. Three of these are twin bedded upstairs rooms. There is a bathroom with a step into the shower upstairs. The other two rooms on the ground floor have double-beds with a shared bathroom. The kitchen/breakfast facilities are upstairs. There is no lift in this wing.
KITCHENETTE / SMALL KITCHEN – each floor has a kitchenette or small kitchen with everything needed for a self-service breakfast. Drinks, biscuits and fruit are available on each floor at any time.
MEALS – lunch and dinner are taken in the dining room – a short covered walk from the yoga hall.
Drinks and biscuits are provided mid-morning with drinks and cake mid-afternoon in the dining hall. Food is home cooked, delicious & portions are generous. Special diets can be catered for if notified in advance.
Lunch is at 12.30pm. Dinner is at 6.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday and 6.15pm Monday to Friday.
YOGA HALL – there are 3 steps, with a hand rail, down to the yoga hall. There is a loop facility, wifi access and a powerpoint projector and screen.
In the main house there are 3 well-equipped sitting rooms that are suitable for discussion or socialising, each accessible by lift. St Marks room on the first floor will take a small remedial/therapeutic group (maximum 7) for yoga.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS – unfortunately the main house is not completely wheelchair friendly but there is good access to the dining room and reception areas. It has a purpose built toilet for the disabled easily accessible from the dining room.
EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE – a computer with internet WiFi access on the ground floor in ‘St Frances de Sales’ room. There is an overhead projector, DVD player, flip charts and whiteboards available if needed by prior arrangement. TV’s are also available in the 3 sitting rooms.
CHAPEL – mass is daily at 9.30 am Monday-Friday. Saturday and Sunday 10 am. Guests are very welcome.
ARRIVE from 4pm onwards with dinner at 6.15pm on Friday. The venue must be informed of any late arrivals prior to the event.
TRAVEL – if using a Sat Nav the postcode of the annexe is IG8 8AX. Detailed travel instructions will be sent when you book. We are asked not to use the convent entrance and to use the entrance to St John’s School in Turpins Lane.
